According to the United States Census Bureau, Kīhei has a total area of 11.9 square miles (30.8 km2), of which, 10.2 square miles (26.3 km2) of it is land and 1.7 square miles (4.5 km2) of it (14.55%) is water. It is considered to be the South Side of Maui, located on the leeward side of Haleakala. The climate is arid, receiving no more than 10 inches of rain per year.

Several research facilities are located in Kihei, including the main offices for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
